Are you burning with envy that Ice Cream Sandwich is practically on every phone except your T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 and you just can’t wait until the update arrives on your phone?

Thanks to XDA-Developers forum member Racing19969, T-Mobile Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 users can enjoy a ported version of AT&T’s Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. You won’t have to wait for the official update to land on T-Mobile to enjoy the gorgeous Ice Cream Sandwich firmware.

The ROM still has a few issues that need working out, such as auto-rotate and shutdown not working properly, but it should be sufficient to tide you over until the official update comes your way.

Compatibility

This ROM is compatible only with the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989. You may check your device’s model number through “Settings > About Phone.” If your model number does not match, then we highly discourage users from attempting to flash this ROM to their devices as it may lead to bricking.

Requirements

  • Rooted T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 with ClockworkMod Recovery installed.  If you need help, check our guide on how to root the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2.
  • Flashing this ROM will delete any data on your phone so make sure to create a backup of any important data.
  • Fully charged battery. This prevents your T-Mobile Galaxy S2 from shutting off in the middle of the update process.
  • Ported version of AT&T’s Android 4.0 for T-Mobile.  Download from one of these sources (SGH-I727-Port-To-SGH-T989.zip, md5sum: 23f8c5d0ef4671b231cab6c2df244324):

Instructions

  1. Copy the Android 4.0 port ZIP file into the root of your Samsung S2′s internal SD card.
  2. Power down your phone.
  3. Boot into recovery mode. You can do this by pressing and holding down the Volume Up, Volume Down, and Power keys.
  4. Once in Recovery, make a Nandroid backup. This allows you to revert to your previous ROM in case something does not work out with the Android 4.0 port.  Create the backup from Backup and restore > Backup.
  5. Return to main recovery menu.
  6. Select “Wipe Data/Factory Reset” and confirm the reset.
  7. Go to Advanced and then select “Wipe Dalvik Cache.”  Confirm the cache wipe.
  8. Repeat steps 6 and 7.
  9. Return to main recovery menu.
  10. Select “Install ZIP from SD Card.”  Select the Android 4.0 ZIP file.
  11. Once flashing is complete, select “Go Back.”
  12. Select “Reboot System Now.”
  13. Leave the phone untouched for about 10 minutes.
  14. When you see the AT&T ReadyToGo screen, tap Cancel and allow the installation to continue for about a few minutes more.
  15. Set up your phone (e.g., Wi-Fi, APN settings, etc.).

Congratulations! Your T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 is now running on Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, courtesy of firmware leaked from the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and ported to your phone.

Something you may want to look into is to hard reset your handset. What version hardware are you using? Are you using a 3rd party recovery image like Clockword mod?

    • Norris Colman

How did you solve this, I am in the same spot

      • taher naqash

pull your battery out and then re-insert into phone again……after retrying again n again your phone shall go into download mode and then you need to re-install the custom rom from zero…….but once u get it installed your phone shall have echo problem……….the other party shall complain that he/she is hearing his own voice back when he speaks…….to cope with this problem i again shifted back to stock gingerbread 2.3.6 rom
