Do you own a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 with an ICS-based CyanogenMod 9 ROM? If you do or even if you don’t, we have good news for you and your phone. The CyanogenMod team has added nightly ROM build support for CyanogenMod 9 for the Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000. This means that the latest changes made by the developers are applied to the ROMs everyday. You can update your phone everyday by installing a nightly ROM. Read on to learn more.

Overview

The Samsung Galaxy S was one of the best Android phones when it was released. Users were attracted by the powerful specs sported by the smartphone which included a 1 GHz processor, 512 RAM, 5 megapixel auto-focus camera, and a beautiful Super AMOLED display. The Galaxy S started off with Android 2.1 Eclair as its OS, but people were disappointed when Samsung declared that it wouldn’t be getting an Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update.

One of the best developers that came into town are the guys in the CyanogenMod team. Thanks to them, the Samsung Galaxy S also got a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich, even if it was unofficial. Now, they gave the smartphone a nightly ROM support resulting in even better performance and greater stability. This also means that you get the latest developments on the ROM faster, since changes are applied everyday.

On the other hand, you still have to expect some bugs and issues in this ROM, but the great thing is that you don’t have to wait too long to update the ROM. If you want to install or update this ROM, check out the instructions and requirements below.

Requirements

Here are the things that you need before you can start installation. Make sure that you don’t skip anything on the list.

Instructions

  1. Copy the two files that you have downloaded  to the root of the internal SD card on your phone.
  2. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S.
  3. Boot your phone into ClockworkMod Recovery by pressing the Volume Up key, Home button, and the Power button at the same time and wait until the screen turns on. When you are already in Recovery Mode, use the Volume keys to navigate and the Power button to select an option.
  4. Perform a full wipe on your phone by doing the following.
    1. Choose Wipe data/factory reset and confirm by selecting “Yes” on the next screen.
    2. Choose Wipe cache and confirm by selecting “Yes” on the next screen.
  5. Flash the ROM by selecting Install zip from SD card > Choose zip from the SD card. Choose the CyanogenMod package that you copied to the phone earlier and confirm the installation.
  6. Once the installation is done, select Go back to return to the main recovery menu.
  7. Flash the Google Apps package (this is optional) by repeating step 5. Choose the file for the package and confirm the installation by selecting “Yes”.
  8. After successfully flashing the two files, select Go back then select Reboot system now to reboot your phone. It might take about 5 minutes for the phone to boot completely.

Updating to the latest version of the ROM

If you already have this ROM and you would want to update it to the latest version, you’ll just need to follow the same set of instructions but skip step number 4 and jump directly to the flashing of the ROM.

Congratulations! You can now enjoy Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich on your Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 via the latest nightly build of CyanogenMod 9.

Screw it, the phone should have had a stable OS upon release. My contract is almost up so I wilil get a new phone, but it’s not my job or anyone else to fix a problem that should never have been and risk it not working properly at all in the process of doing the update. I still have the standard OS on my phone and it stall and lags constantly, pretty much did from the first day I got it.
