Galaxy Alpha is official: compact, metal frame, launching in early September

samsung galaxy alpha press

Just as rumors suggested, Samsung made the Galaxy Alpha official today, in a momentous step towards infusing some style into the design of its devices.

Most of the specifications of the Galaxy Alpha have leaked over the past couple of weeks, so there are no surprises here. You get a 4.7-inch HD display, an octa-core Exynos processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (non-expandable), a 12MP rear camera, LTE Category 6, and an 1860 mAh battery.

  • Dimensions: 132.4 x 65.5 x 6.7 mm, 115g
  • Display: 4.7” HD Super AMOLED (1280 x 720)
  • Processor: Exynos 5430 Octa Core (Quad 1.8GHz + Quad 1.3GHz)
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Storage: 32GB, non-expandable
  • Camera: 12MP (rear) + 2.1MP (front)
  • Battery: 1860 mAh
  • Connectivity: WiFi: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, MIMO(2×2), Bluetooth 4.0 BLE / ANT+, USB: USB 2.0, NFC
  • LTE: LTE Cat.6 (300/50Mbps), nano-SIM card
  • Fingerprint sensor: yes
  • Hear rate sensor: yes
  • Waterproofing: no
  • Android 4.4.4

The real story, however, is the design of the phone, which incorporates a metal frame going around the edges of the Alpha. The back is still made of plastic, and features a variation of the dimpled texture we’re all familiar with from the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy Alpha will be available in five color options at launch: Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue. Availability of the color options will vary by market.

The back is removable, as is the 1860 mAh battery, but there is no microSD expansion slot.

Weighing 115 grams, the Galaxy Alpha is an impressive 6.7 millimeters thin, though the camera module on the back is protruding, somehow similar to the Galaxy S2. In fact, the entire device, with its squarish lines, is reminiscent of the Galaxy S2, the smartphone that first put Samsung on the map.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha will launch in early September, and it will eventually go on sale in 150 markets. That refutes past rumors claiming the Alpha would be a limited edition device.

Samsung’s recommended retail price for the Galaxy Alpha is 599 euros, putting the device at the top of the scale, alongside the Galaxy S5 and the upcoming Note 4. On contracts with US carriers, we can expect a price tag of $100-$200.

Samsung Introduces Galaxy Alpha, the evolution of Galaxy Design

Samsung redefines its smartphone design with a stunning new look featuring sophisticated design techniques and compact construction

Seoul, Korea – Aug 13, 2014 9AM GMT – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today unveiled its new design approach with the Galaxy Alpha. The latest addition to Samsung’s Galaxy smartphone line, the Galaxy Alpha features a sophisticated design in a carefully constructed compact body with a metal frame and a solid finish, while still maintaining the flagship Galaxy experience. Elegant and practical, the Galaxy Alpha is the optimal convergence of style and cutting-edge technology.

“The Galaxy Alpha was built and designed based on the specific desires of the consumer market,” said JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Communication at Samsung Electronics. “With an entirely new appearance, the Galaxy Alpha focuses on both beauty and functionality combining a stunning metal frame and slim, light weight design with the same powerful hardware and features users expect from a flagship Galaxy mobile device.”

Setting a New Standard for Samsung Galaxy Design

Concentrating on elegant aesthetics and compact construction, Samsung has taken a fresh approach to design with the Galaxy Alpha. Created to help consumers express their unique style without sacrificing functionality, the refined Galaxy Alpha features a sophisticated design with a metal frame, elegantly curved corners and a tactile soft back cover. In addition, it is visually balanced, with the perfect contrast of both a calming, soft matte finish and an eye-catching reflection from the metal frame. At less than 7 mm thick, the Galaxy Alpha is also one of the slimmest Galaxy devices ever, and its uniquely compact construction and light weight provides consumers with maximum in-hand grip and control.

 Powerful Samsung Galaxy Experience

Despite its slim and light design, the Galaxy Alpha provides users with the same powerful hardware and features users expect from a flagship Galaxy mobile device. The device is equipped with a brilliant 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display as well as an advanced camera and real time HDR for an unrivaled viewing and photo experience. The Galaxy Alpha also includes innovative and popular features such as Ultra-Power Saving Mode, S Health, Finger Print Scanner, Private Mode and connectivity with the latest Samsung Gear Fit, Gear Live and Gear 2 wearables.

The Galaxy Alpha will be available at the beginning of September. At launch, it will be available in Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue, with available colors to be determined by market.

  • Jesus

    k damn… i want one.

  • Patryk Kulesza

They should put better screen and battery in it.

    • das

      how ?

      • DDT

By waiting for Apple to introduce next iPhone with better screen and battery, then coping it.

        • das

what ? samsung does not copy apple ,apple copies

          • DDT

Ha ha……. And what’s this ? A phone samsung is trying to make as similar to the next iPhone as possible. Insane how people can lie to themselves.

          • das

where is iphone removable battery ? iphone slim bezels ? iphone AMOLED display ? this looks nothing like a iphone ,

    • Jose

      it’s a tiny phone… and very light. I don’t think a ‘better’ screen would make a difference.

my nexus 4, 720p, is awesome. Don’t see the point of having a 1080p screen on this.

      • DDT

The problem is that, this one is pen-tile, which means it’s on the level of RGB galaxy S2 in terms of sharpness.

        • Ana liza

          The S2 had a non-pentile 480*800 4.3 inch screen. The Galaxy S3 had the 4.8″ 720p pentile screen.

        • filaos

Are you sure the Alpha’s screen is Pentile ?

          • DDT

Yes, samsung is unable to produce an RGB amoled that is over 300 ppi.

          • Esaxgame08x

            and the Moto X has a non-pentile 720p sAMOLED…

          • Andrew T Roach

Diamond Matrix Pentile not the old style Pentile.

  • David

it actually looks nice, no tired past galaxy design

    • Jesus

It’s like a Galaxy S2 and modern Galaxy design. Pretty conservative but and sleek in my opinion.

      • David

yeah, they all start looking good then they launch the galaxy S “x” mini and the trend and the young and the fame and the pocket and blah blah blah and that just makes the design old and tired because you see it everywhere

    • jjredfish

Yeah, that’s because it is the Apple design (“Apple” – “Alpha”, get it?)

Well, it WAS the Apple design… (in less than a month the iPhone 6 will be released).

      • Jesus

You’re an idiot, or just… i duno, new to the English speaking world??

Just because it’s small, rectangular and starts with A, doesn’t mean it’s an Apple design, fanboy.

        • jjredfish

No, not “just because” of those things. There are plenty of others. And this is not just about fanboys, everybody sees it. Do a Google search for – Alpha copied iPhone – and see how many hits you get.

And if you don’t think Samsung chose the name “Alpha” to make people think (subconsciously or otherwise) “Apple”, for a phone they tried to make look like an iPhone, you are very, very naive.

          • Jesus

Besides you, no idiot will get confused between ‘Alpha’ and ‘Apple’ lmao…

You: “Hi can I get the new iAlpha 6 please, from the Alpha store…” Idiot.

          • jjredfish

Who said anything about “confusion”? Samsung knows they can’t trick you into thinking the Alpha is good enough to be an actual Apple product. They want you to see the “Alpha” with “chamfer edges” and think “Apple”, but then buy the crappy Alpha anyway because it’s cheaper.

  • Shark Bait

Just adding a metal edge doesn’t change the fundamental that is Samsung design language is tired.
    Also that battery!!

    • MasterMuffin

They should have taken useless stuff away like the heart rate sensor. It wouldn’t give a lot more space for a bigger battery, but anything is better

      • Urbz

you mean the Hear Rate sensor, for your Hear’s

        • Urbz

          Hear rate sensor: yes

    • patrik

Ofcourse you’re here trolling against Samsung.. Lay it off man, it’s not a fulltime job.

      • Shark Bait

haha it is for the times my full time job is going slow. (also im being paid by apple to do so (but shhhhhhhhhh))

Im not completely anti Samsung, I just think a company with those resources could do better. It seems they are like my dog, he chases rabbits, but when he get them he doesn’t know what to do with it. Now replace the dog with Samsung and the rabbit with apple and you get a galaxy alpha!

    • I mean you can always make something better and put it in the market.

      • Shark Bait

ohhh yeahhh compare me to one of the largest corporations in the world. Great comment!
my company is at least growing unlike sammy

        • Oh I just figured people that complain and bash products can do better. Maybe I’m wrong.

          • Shark Bait

That is one if the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard in the comments. Consumers judge products all the time, that’s the idea.We judge which we thing is the best and then buy that one. Consumers are suppose to bash products!
Suppliers are here to serve the customer.
The customer does not serve the supplyer

    • mike davis

Not to mention the specs suck for a phone that expensive.

  • Allality

Does it have OIS like S5 Active?

  • Luka Mlinar

In terms of design Samsung always changed one thing and hopes for the best.

  • Lilith_Black

Is it just me or is the “dimpled” texture less ugly here? (It seems to be smaller and less spaced apart)

  • Jack Parker

Unfortunately although this is a device that is meant to be ” mid range ” it’ll be priced around £450 I believe

When you could get a one plus one ( when available ) for half that

I do like this phone though

  • Jaromir KM Bracki

I hope there is a GPE version of it too, or at least stripped down TouchWiz. I think most people are fed up with Samsung’s bloatware.

  • What would’ve made me at least bat an eye : 1080p at that screen size, get rid of the heart sensor and replace it with dual LED flash, and brushed metal back like in the previous leaks. Definitely not impressed.

  • k4ever

No microSD card slot? No deal!

  • John Zakaria

What am I supposed to do with that battery ?!

    • BatDroid

Charge it!!! whenever wherever you get a chance.

    • Guest

      bough a electric generator

    • SandPox

      get a electric generator first

    • John Zakaria

I don’t know what I would do without you :P
I would have scratched the battery

    • takpro

It’s about the same as the iPhone.

      • John Zakaria

Have you ever seen a multitasking Ios or a quad-core with a big screen? I don’t think so

        • takpro

I believe we were discussing the size of the battery. That’s about what is in an iPhone.

    • MasterMuffin

      Lick it

      • John Zakaria

You are my Hero I wasn’t able to figure that out alone XD
Biting it is a better choice ;)

  • DDT

Why there is no article about how this thing is going to fail, and how it doesn’t bring any innovation just some marketing fluff ? Oh that one is reserved for the next iPhone even though it is shaping to be better all around and more tempting to android users that this.

  • Preben Nielsen

The poll is f*cked. Where’s the “no, I do not want or recommend this phone. It still looks too much like a every other Samsung phone with that ugly button” option ?

  • criccric

Alpha really? This is the best Sammy has to give? Good luck in advance to those who intend to buy this with that octa core + 1800mah battery they are going to need it. Also as this is Sammy’s “premium” offering they might also need a big wallet just to make the purchase.

  • John-Phillip Saayman

The blue looks good. It’s what the blue s5 needed to be. Not with a black front.

    • SaRPeR

Samsung is preparing to launch a new color option for the S5 with all blue color. It will have a blue front maybe you will like that.

  • VishalSFX

  • SaRPeR

Can this use all 8 cores at the same time ?

    • BatDroid

Yeah!….But only when you have connected charger….. :P

  • thomas sim

It’s good move from Samsung, but why the hell 1860mAh, even grandpa S3 had much larger battery.

  • Looks cool and don’t let the numbers drive you to a conclusion. We’ll see how the battery will perform but I think Samsung might have done some optimizations to get atleast a day of battery endurance.

  • _X_

I want this! The blue or Black one…silver is not bad! I love my S5, but wanted to replace my S2 with a similar size phone! To bad I am stuck in a contract…. :(

  • I was waiting for this but no Expandable Store = No Buy.

  • Groud Frank

The battery ab screen size is a deal breaker for me but I like he design. Why didn’t they do this with the S5? I’m guessing they couldn’t put a higher resolution display in it because of the tiny battery but a pixel count of 312ppi isn’t the end of the world.

  • BatDroid

I like it. Except maybe for the battery and price, other things are going in favour of alpha. The fingerprint scanner/ heart rate monitor aren’t my thing.

  • Leandro Brandão

The device is beautiful even with the plastic back, but the specs… 720p, galaxy nexus like battery, heart rate crap, not waterproof. I don’t understand if this is iPhone 6 killer.

  • Dimitrios Pandioras

1860mAh battery? Really? What were they thinking.

    • xoj_21

its an 20nm cpu… 25 it should last as long s4

  • Bob

For a phone with more midrange specs like this, if the price was lower, I would buy it, but certainly not at a premium price tag.

  • I wouldn’t buy it because it’s too small and the specs are not up to my standards but I will say this, I really really hope this doesn’t lead to the Note 4 not having expandable memory. I have never seen a Samsung phone without expandable memory, hope this isn’t the Alpha for all things to come. But if the Note 4 does not feature expandable memory then it needs to have 64-128gb onboard memory.

  • chanman

The only gripe I have about Samsung design? Find a damn logo (even that asymmetrical ellipsoid thing) and drop the text. I hate having a company’s name branded all over my devices. Maybe take it off the front at least.

    • Richard

You must be using an iPhone or a Moto device because
Nokia, LG, HTC, Sony all have their company name on the front of their devices.

      • chanman

nope, I’m on a Samsung Note II.
I hate that about the HTC One M8 as well, taking up that much unnecessary space. Somehow it isn’t as annoying with Nokia and Sony… but I can’t explain why, and it’d certainly look better without. I didn’t say that exclusively Samsung bothered me doing this, I said that this was the one exclusive thing about Samsung design that bothers me. That, and TouchWiz bloat, but that’s UI.

  • John Garlits

Poll answer not included: Maybe if it’s a GPE!

  • Emeka

Iphone lookalike… I still like it though

Now this shit looks like iPhone ripoff with Band-Aid on back. I would rather buy xiaomi mi4.

    • Jerry Rich

      So buy one jerk.

    • wholeass

      Then do it and stfu

  • Sal

Well it is a small step up in design but still a long way to go.

  • jjredfish

    Samsung has outdone themselves!

    Chamfered edges!

    Most pathetic Apple copy ever!

Oh, Sammy, just stop. You are embarrassing yourself. Again. As always.

    • SaRPeR

      Great ! Another Apple fanboy….

      • jjredfish

        You’re welcome!

      • Jerry Rich

Thankfully, the “apple fanboy” is a dying breed.

    • Jesus

      Small phone!
      Metal edges!

      • jjredfish

You are actually much more creative than Samsung. What you have described could look like a billion things other than an iPhone, and yet, Samsung somehow makes their new phone look as much like an iPhone as possible.

You are so creative, Jesus, why don’t you tell us why they would want to do that? Why WOULD Samsung want their new phone to look as much like an iPhone as possible? They keep doing it, so there has to be a reason… Come on now, I’m sure you can think of it… It’s not that difficult. Even Samsung can do it. Over and over again. Hmmm…

        • Jesus

lol. You are pathetic my friend.

          • jjredfish

Can’t answer a simple question? Who is pathetic?

          • ERYREB

You do realise that we can all see the dozens of postings you’ve left all over the Internet knocking this phone? Then you ask who is pathetic.

Can I give you a clue…. If you want to act all weird, make sure people can’t see all your past posts… You’re welcome.

          • jjredfish

Why would I write it if I didn’t want anyone to see it? And why would I limit a reply to only one article, when other people are discussing the same thing on other articles? Is this one site/article the whole of the internet to you?

            How ridiculously myopic.

          • jjredfish

Why would I write it if I did not want everyone to see it? There are many other people discussing this same topic on many other articles. Why would I limit myself to this one? Is this one site/article the whole of the internet for you?

          • jjredfish

Pathetic is doing a poor job copying a competitor’s two year-old phone.

      • jjredfish

        -Metal Design (new)
        -Chamfered Edges (new)
        -Single Mono Speaker (new)
        -Internal Memory Only (new)
-Centrally Located Home Button (copied ages ago)

Also, Samsung went back to 720P to allow for themal constraints and improved battery life. Designing big devices is easy. Room for everything and thermal headroom sacrificing all usability.

Welcome the Samsung design team back! Small devices are far more challenging to balance performance, battery life and easy handling. At least the exterior was easy :)

It’s simply amazing how many people don’t understand what Samsung is trying to achieve with this phone.

This phone is aimed at those who prefer form over function (ie. the Apple crowd). Clearly they wanted to achieve two things, a very thin phone (lots of research has shown that thin phones are viewed as premium and can command a better price) and a metal body (which the ‘form over function’ crowd prefer).

The rest should now be self explanatory:

    1. Thin means small battery
    2. Small battery means a display that isn’t too demanding
    3. Removable MicroSD card not important to the demographic and removal helps keep the phone thin
    4. Specs not as important to the demographic
    5. Metal body is the worst choice of material for the phone to function, so minimize its use while maintaining a premium look
    6. Price isn’t a big a factor with this demographic

    • hhy2k

In my opinion, you just nailed what this phone is about…

    • Andrew T Roach

Metal is the worst choice? Better thermal transference through the Metal decreases throttling of the SoC, which happens to ALL flagships, especially those of the quad-core Snapdragon variety due to old architecture and low performance per-clock speed.

Basically, Metal bodies increase performance over time.

No phones are designed to be dropped, and the larger the screen, the easier said screen shatters. Assuming the device will fall on its plastic sides is unrealistic when half of the device is screen. And Metal is still great for protection. The device just will be ugly after a naked drop.

      • ERYREB

Metal bodies mandate external antennas, they are more expensive and they damage more easily than poly-carbonate. The one advantage you mention is correct, but it’s also a drawback in that phones can get hot to the touch, as has happened with a number of Apple devices.

HOWEVER, the Exynos 5430 uses 20nm lithography and therefore its TDP will be lower than older 28nm SoCs, so your point is likely not valid in this case anyway.

    • thelastguyX20

So you’re literally saying that they’re copying Apple?

      • ERYREB

I’m suggesting that they’re targeting a similar demographic.

In terms of copying, of course Samsung copies Apple, but it’s starting to swing the other way around as Apple scrambles to keep up. Larger screens, replaceable keyboard S/W, better multitasking etc.

  • olegulen

If they had dropped the galaxy name and made a clean back (not dimpled) I think they woukd have been on to something. The Samsung Alpha would be a much better name, a more “premium” name to fit a premium looking device.
The Galaxy name is milked dry to be quite honest! The screen could also be higher resolution, but is not a deal breaker.

  • Jesus

…it’s aimed for people who like the iphone size and ‘quality’. And it will win them over in my opinion.

  • BatDroid

    Is it iPod 6th gen???

  • hhy2k

I don’t like Samsung much, but this is a great phone. Nice size, light, 720p screen will speed up Android lugginess. I hope the screen is not pentine. The rubbery back is much better for a grip than the iPhone 5s’s. 317 ppi is great IMO. 115 grams is the sweet spot. I wish it had iOS…. But I just wait for the iPhone 6… In 3 weeks….

  • jack

nothing new.. just looks like an iphone even more

  • jjredfish

Funny that my posts keep getting deleted, and then get reposted multiple times all at once…

Sorry for the repeats, folks. Someone is playing games.

  • Andrew T Roach

iPhone 5 inspired is an understatement. Chamfered edges AND bottom speakers. At least its not using Snapdragon. 720P is sufficient, and still looks great for ALL uses. Yes this is Pentile. Diamond Matrix though like the S5.

What reduced resolution does is greatly reduce power consumption, which is obviously a priority in a smaller device. Less pixels to render allows the SoC to go to sleep faster. Less SoC work reduces thermal strain as well. Faster load times. Less power required for backlight as well (not applicable in AMOLED). There are many advantages to reducing resolution, and only 1 advantage for increasing it, which honestly is quite negligible even looking at them side-by-side. Any 720P display is 100% useable andstill very sharp.

This is why designing small, but high end devices is far more challenging. Balancing power consumption, battery space and thermal headroom for a high power SoC is really something that only Apple has achieved so far.

  • Xavier Sandy

Except the 1860 mAh battery, I’ve started liking a Samsung Smartphone for the first time but …….
599 Euros???? Seriously Samsung, Are you out of your mind?
Do you really think that people really ignore smartphones like G3, M8, S5 to buy this phone at 599 euros?

  • michaelmicro

Samsung don’t yet seem to have realised that the reason I wouldn’t be buying this device is because it’s running Android. I can already get a perfectly capable Android device for £100-£150 in the Moto G, so Samsung really need to change course, fast, if they want to be able to continue selling devices.

  • Buzzzzezee

You ain’t S until you’ve had L. Good luck without Volta

  • emil

well, i’ll just stay with my oneplus one then

  • Anthony_

Looks like samsung tryed to pulled a fast one trying to make a “iphone”
:P some poeple werent born to be metal

  • Anthony_

  • Kacey

I don’t think people realize that this phone sounds like an iPhone because it’s supposed to compare with an iPhone.
Previously I don’t think galaxy phones and iphones were really targeting the same audience. IPhones are more “in”, and galaxy’s seemed more targeted at people who wanted to do more with their phone than call, text, tweet, and play music or games.
I don’t think Samsung is directly copying, but the point of the phone is to appeal to people who want a small, slim, pretty phone, as opposed to more of a powerhouse phone. And they very well may be mimicking some iPhone designs. Frankly, I don’t see that as low so much as clever marketing trickery. I think they did a pretty good job with this phone. I won’t be purchasing an alpha, but I don’t think I’m the target audience here (along with most people hating on this phone). So I’m fine with that.

  • roki977 .

    1860 mAh WTF…

  • echo1284

So it will cost more than the S5. No expandable memory, not fully metal…a smaller battery? Whats wrong with all the makers lol? Good screen size though attractive look..epic fail.

  • jack

    Still plastic

  • jack

Lol U$776 dollars for a 32GB phone.. While I can get an iPhone 6 64GB for 30 bucls CHEAPER

  • krym73
