Mozilla Firefox was for a long while the best alternative to Microsoft’s once-ubiquitous Internet Explorer. But those times have longed passed, and now Google’s Chrome is leading the assault against the IE fortress. Nevertheless, Firefox still has a huge user base and a dedicated community behind it, that has worked hard in the recent months to make up the ground that Firefox lost to Chrome.

These days, the fiercest battles are fought on the mobile front, where Chrome has gained a solid foothold as soon as it became available on ICS devices. In addition, Firefox has found some worthy opponents in mobile- only browsers, such as Dolphin, which is apparently, the highest performing HTML5 mobile browser.

Although Firefox is late at the mobile browser game, Mozilla will not give up without a fight. And apparently, something BIG (capitalization not mine) is coming as soon as next week for Firefox on Android. Check out this tweet from Mozilla itself:

Hmm… Fast, smart, safe. Pretty much all we want from a browser. Mozilla might be preparing a major update to Firefox for Android, or they might surprise us with something completely new. We can’t help notice that Google I/O is also taking place next week. Could the two events be related in any way?

We’ll just have to wait and see.
