Today Bethesda has announced a massive update (the biggest in history, in fact) for Fallout Shelter. For those of you who haven’t played it, the game takes place in a Vault-Tec vault in Fallout’s iconic wasteland. Here you build up your vault while taking care of your dwellers and adventure through the wasteland. Fallout Shelter has been a big hit, with over 10 million Overseers in the Play Store alone and topping 50 million players total.

The big version 1.6 update is rolling out now with an exciting new quest system with a new combat mechanic, as well as two items for Overseers in a hurry: the Starter Pack, which enables players to get a jump-start their new vault, and Nuka-Cola Quantum, which speeds up certain tasks in the vault as well as dwellers returning from the wasteland.

With version 1.6, there are many more substantial quests that can be done in the wasteland
According to Bethesda, dwellers have played more than 5 billion game sessions and have sent out more than 715 million dwellers into the wasteland to search for items and new recipes to craft new weapons and armor. But now, you can do a whole lot more. With 1.6, there are more substantial quests that can be done in the wasteland. Overseers can now take control of the wasteland dweller while they go through decrepit vaults and iconic Fallout landmarks like the Red Rocket fuel stop and the Super Duper Mart.

There’s also a new combat system in the game. Overseers now have the ability to gain control of the dweller and select which opponents to attack, and you can even play a little mini game for a chance at a critical hit. Impatient Overseers can also use a Nuka-Cola Quantum to return the dweller instantly back to the vault if they so choose. Here’s a quick video detailing all the new features in v1.6.

Another huge surprise is that Fallout Shelter is now available on PC for free through the Bethesda.net launcher! This launch includes all of the content you’ve come to love including Pets, Crafting, Scrapping and Junk as well as dweller customization and of course everything in the 1.6 update. You can download the Bethesda.net launcher directly from here.
