Droid RAZR, RAZR Maxx Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade official

After a rollercoaster ride made of various Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade rumors for the Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx, we can finally confirm that the two Android handsets will get Android 4.0.4 in the following days.

Verizon has posted software upgrade instructions for the handsets on its website, and you should prepare your RAZR version for the upcoming over-the-air (OTA) download. The carrier details two ways of getting the OTA upgrade: OTA User Initiated and OTA Server Initiated.

    OTA User Initiated

    1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu Key > tap Settings > About phone > System updates > Download.
    2. Once the download has completed, tap Install now. The device will power off and back on and show a progress bar and an installing icon. Once installation is complete the device powers off and back on again, finalizing the installation.
    3. You will get a confirmation on the screen that your install was successful, then tap OK

    OTA Server Initiated

    1. You will be notified that a system update is available on your device. Tap Download to begin.
    2. Once the download has completed, tap Install now. The device will power off and back on and show a progress bar and an installing icon. Once installation is complete the device powers off and back on again, finalizing the installation.
    3. You will get a confirmation on the screen that your install was successful, then tap OK.

As you can see, there are little differences between the manual and automatic OTA download, and the end result is the same, your Droid RAZR or RAZR Maxx will finally run ICS.

Yayayayayayayayayay! Lol I had a nexus and switched to the RAZR. Great phone but ics made my day so glad it’s officially coming and not another disappointing rumor

      • MsCheleG

My phone has frozen on the “Android is upgrading… Starting applications” screen for well over a half hour now. I have no idea whether I should force restart or wait…

Same problem. Forced reboot and it seemed to start okay. Homescreen and ADWex both keep freezing up though. Scratch that. Everything seems to be freezing and force closing.

      • Mscheleg

They said it takes a few hours.

Same problem here now. What happened with yours?

    • cwbrown

Still no push no manual update available

      • jima

Ok, good.. I thought I was the only one, yours is the first post I have seen that wasn’t some form of “update is here (war is over)”

    • jaysun518

I hope this takes care of the Data connectivity problems I’ve been having…what a nightmare… my Bionic worked wat better than this.

      • Jake o

You have to go to the play store and download the app from motorola called “restore data connectivity.” That fixed my 4g nightmare

    • April

Still no update for my RAZR but my husbands RAZR got it this morning. What the crap?

      • Dan Kram

No update for me either! Stop f’ing with us Verizon and push the damn thing already.

      • wsomar

        “PULL” instead of “PUSH”
Initiate download as explained in “OTA User Initiated” in the article. Push method depends on location, network loading, etc. But you can chose to pull any time.

    • Piss’doff5yearcustomer

The hell with all this damn leaks and drips and select users getting ICS hurry up !

    • JayBoss

Ics comes out based on your serial number….so it works like a first come first served basis…so if you bought the phone closest to its release date…you will get it first

    • JayBoss

      Hopefully that helps

    • Dannyplag

Hello again, everyone.Later tonight we’ll end our soak test. A phased roll out of the software will begin soon. We are deeply grateful for the feedback and information provided. This was by far the largest soak we’ve ever attempted. We didn’t really know what it would be like to have so many participants. We learned a lot and have already figured out some better ways to do things in the future. We appreciate you hanging in there as as we ploughed through all the information you provided. To those of you who did not get the update or were unable to access the private community — your experience has also helped us find and correct issues. We’ll be better next time based on your feedback.
Please remember that the processes, information and communications shared during this soak test are confidential and not to be shared outside of this private community. However, we do hope you will return to the public RAZR/RAZR Maxx community — here and on other sites — and help your fellow owners make the transition to Ice Cream Sandwich. We will leave the private community up for a short time, but once you log out it will no longer be available to you. Soon we will close the threads to comments. We will continue to work with some of you and reach out if we need additional information.Thank you so, so much. Hope to see you again in soaks. We rely on your energy, intelligence and enthusiasm.- MattMotorola Feedback Network

I WAS A SOAK TESTER FOR ICS AND IT ENDS TONIGHT I POSTED THE EMAIL WE ALL GOT

    • razrog

I CAN TELL YOU ALL NOW BATTERY IS GONNA BE A HUGE ISSUE THE FIRST FEW DAYS. IT GETS ALLOT BETTER EVERY CHARGE CYCLE YOU DO. ONCE YOU RECEIVE THE UPDATE WIPE ALL APP CACHE AND DO ALL THE APP UPDATES. SECOND IF U WANT TO SPEED UP THE BATTERY ISSUE AFTER YOU RECEIVE THE UPDATE DO A FACTORY DATA RESET.

    • ejay010

WTF ABOUT THIS F’ING GSM RAZR I HAVE TODAY IS THE F’ING 29TH OF JUNE AND I STILL DON’T SEE ANY NOTIFICATION ABOUT SYSTEM UPDATES. IT’S PISSING ME OFF. I WANT MY ICE CREAM SANDWICH NOW! FUCK DREAD. COME ON MOTOROLA I SURE THIS THE END OF Q2.

Because of problems when I upgraded my Asus Transformer tablet to ICS, I ended up doing a factory reset and the tablet functioned much smoother after the reset. Does anyone know whether a factory reset on a Droid Razr is advisable after the upgrade to ICS?

    • http://www.facebook.com/scott.pressman1 Scott Pressman

I got it at 10am today

    • NotHappy

    • ICSBOOOOO

ICS update killed my Razr. Can’t force power off, touchscreen unresponsive, can receive but not answer calls, factory reboot doesn’t help, and can’t force power off to do a recovery boot option. Stay away from ICS.

    • cedz

hey is anyone else having the problem of once downloading and installing the ICS update your RAZR will freeze once starting applications. any help is appreciated.

I’m having the same issue… what did you do to fix it…??!! :(

    • becky

Ok what the heck, my phone updated and i am considering suing. This is not the phone i bought. Its ok to update for info purposes, but to completely change the color and background? We should have a choice. I can not see the words as well as the old one. I bought it based on that i could see it. Now i can’t. So who out there knows how to get these idiots, “ice cream sandwhich”, (really are you all in grade school) to give us an option. Give me the old one back or i will shoot my phone with a 9 mil and save myself the pain.
