CES 2012: Lenovo announces the IdeaPad S2 10 Tablet and S2 Smartphone

January 9, 2012

Earlier today we gave you a hands-on with Lenovo’s new IdeaPad tablet, that is running Android 4.0. Well Lenovo also announced a S2 smartphone to go along with that tablet. The S2 10 tablet is weighing in at a little less then 1.5 pounds, and just to refresh your memory here are the specs:

  • 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 8960 dual-core Processor
  • Lenovo’s Mondrian custom version of Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 10.1-inch 1280×800 IPS Display
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB/32GB/64GB Internal Storage
  • Wifi and 3G Connectivity
  • micro USB, micro SD, Micro HDMI ports
  • 5MP rear camera and 1.3MP front facing camera
  • Integrated keyboard dock also available

Lenovo’s first smartphone, and first Android smartphone will sadly be running Android 2.3 out of the box, but Ice Cream Sandwich should be on it’s way very soon for the S2 smartphone. Here are some of it’s specs:

  • 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor
  • Lenovo Magic 3.0 UI (Android 2.3 – Gingerbread)
  • 3.8-inch 800×480 TFT display
  • 8MP camera and .3MP VGA front facing camera
  • 512MB RAM for devices with 8GB internal storage
  • 1GB RAM for devices with 16GB internal storage
  • Micro USB port
  • HDMI and MHL Connectivity
  • 1500mAh battery

I don’t know about you guys, but I am very surprised at only a 3.8-inch touchscreen. I was expecting a 4″ or higher. Also the RAM size is pretty disappointing, only half a gigabyte for the 8GB model and a full gigabyte for the 16GB model. The fact that the S2 smartphone is launching with Gingerbread isn’t a big surprise, but I’d sure would have liked to see it running Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, wouldn’t you?

These devices are expected to start off in the Chinese market, but will eventually make their way to the rest of the world. Great news and awesome new devices already shown off at CES and it hasn’t even officially started yet. Stay tuned for much more!
