X-Bean is a great custom ROM based on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. It comes with a lot of great features on top of a fast and reliable system.
Thanks to XDA Developers member AceofSpades90, the X-Bean ROM has now been ported to the Samsung Captivate SGH-I897, so you can now try it out and enjoy all the great capabilities that come with it.

The said X-Bean custom ROM port for the Captivate I897 blends the best of two code sources: Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and CyanogenMod 10.  Such blending brings the speed and lightness of AOSP and the customizations and functionality of CyanogenMod 10.

Some functionality found only in stock ROMs will not be available in this ROM, though.  3G video calling and FM Radio, for instance — although you can use third-party apps to get similar functionality.  The camera app may also look different from that in a stock ROM.

This guide shows you how to upgrade the Captivate I897 to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean via X-Bean custom ROM.

Warning

Requirements

  • Samsung Captivate SGH-I897 with ClockworkMod Recovery
  • Download the following files:
    • X-Bean for Samsung Captivate (X-Bean 1.1 Base.zip, 144 MB)
    • Google Apps package (gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip, 83.1 MB)
  • Make sure your device's battery still has at least 70% power. You don't want the device to shut down in the middle of the procedure.
  • Backup all personal data on your phone to make sure you have a copy of your personal data (e.g., contacts, SMS, MMS, Internet settings, Wi-Fi passwords, and the like) in case the procedure in this guide erases such data.

Instructions

  1. Copy the two ZIP files to your phone's internal SD card.
  2. Turn off your phone completely. Make sure it's a complete shutdown by waiting for the vibration and button lights.
  3. Boot the phone into Recovery Mode by holding down both Volume Up and Volume Down buttons as you press the Power button.  Release the Power button as soon as the screen turns on.
  4. Select Wipe data/Factory reset and confirm the reset on the next screen.
  5. Repeat step 4 two more times. The data wipe or factory reset should be done a total of 3 times.
  6. Select Wipe cache partition and confirm the wipe on the next screen.
  7. Select Advanced > Wipe Dalvik cache and confirm the wipe on the next screen.
  8. Select Mounts and storage > Format /system and confirm the action on the next screen.
  9. Select Mounts and storage > Format /cache and confirm the action on the next screen.
  10. Select Install ZIP from SD card > Choose ZIP from SD card and select the X-Bean ROM package.  Confirm that you want to install it.
  11. Repeat step 10 after installation completes.  The dev recommends installing the ROM twice, “just to be on the safe side.”
  12. Return to main recovery menu.
  13. Select Wipe data/Factory reset and confirm the reset on the next screen.
  14. Select Advanced > Fix permissions.
  15. Select Install ZIP from SD card > Choose ZIP from SD card and select the GApps package.  Confirm that you want to install it.
  16. Return to main recovery menu.
  17. Select Advanced > Fix permissions.
  18. Return to main recovery menu.
  19. Select Reboot system now to restart your phone.

Congratulations! After about 5 minutes after the first boot up, you should now be enjoying your newly installed X-Bean custom ROM on your Samsung Captivate SGH-I897.

I got to #7 in instructions, there was no “Advanced” on the list.
There was no “Mounts and Storage” either. I had to go straight to
Install from SD Card and of course got an error “Installation aborted”.
I had no choice after that but to “Reboot” and I thought I had bricked
it. I followed all of your instructions and even remembered to enable
debugging. I think I just learned a good lesson.

Nice looking ROM, however also had issues with the auto screen rotation and external speaker audio – music seems to only play out of the external speaker when headphones are plugged into the jack.

How Long Does Step 10 Take? Cause I Believe my Device is Stuck on The Welcome Screen? There is a Figure of the Android Mascot and at the bottom it says powered by Semaphore. Am I Stuck or what?

    • Daniel

Never mind I Figured out how to solve it :)

my Device is Stuck on The Welcome Screen? How did you solve the issue?

        • Daniel

I Held Power and Both Volume keys till it went back to the Recovery screen and re-did The installing part. but I don’t think its worth it because the Volume doesn’t work unless headphones are plugged in and Home/reverse buttons switch place. I’d recommend you install Slimroms. its very smooth and well built :)

May I ask which app did you people use to fix the internal speaker issue?

  • sgci1897

Nvm I got it. To fix the headset issue just download “sound about” from the play store. Click on the app after install. Under audio routing settings, select media audio, then click wired headphones as your setting. This will fix the “no audio through the internal speaker” problem. Cheers!
