Android running on Ubuntu Linux

ArsTechnica has posted an interesting story about how Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux, is building an Android runtime environment for the Ubuntu (and potentially other) Linux platforms.

While Android is Linux and Java based, it doesn’t exactly play nice with other flavors of Linux and Java, hence the need for a layer of special sauce to go between Ubuntu and Android applications.

Canonical claims that it already has a working prototype version of the Android execution environment running under Ubuntu, and that it will eventually publish the source code so that it might be used by others.

May I point out that Canonical is the company behind Ubuntu and that owns the Ubuntu trademark?

Why do you need to run apps from a phone, on a laptop that has better apps readily available? It just seems crazy to me.. I run Ubuntu on all of my machines and I have a G1. I can not think of one app that I have found for the G1 that does not have one (and 9 out of 10 times a better one) for Ubuntu.

But to each his own I guess, just seems crazy to me.

Brilliant! One development environment for two applications!

In the Windows environment I use apps like Phatpad, ListPro and eWallet, which have a PPC app and a laptop/desktop that sync either through Activesync or on their own. For example, I can take my PC web surfing notes with me. I also have redundant backups of these files when I backup my machine, and then when I backup my phone. With WM and XP I can do all this, using the ease of full computer or the mobility of my phone. Now that I’m transitioning, and loving Ubuntu and my G1 for other reasons, this is the best news I’ve heard for Android yet!
