BlackBerry 10 Android apps only 20% of total apps in store, says company executive

In an interview with All Things D, BlackBerry VP for global alliances and business development Martyn Mallick, said that, out of the 100,000 apps the BlackBerry World store has in it at the moment, only 20 percent are emulated Android apps.

As you may remember, BlackBerry has offered developers the possibility to emulate Android 2.3 applications to BlackBerry 10, and even hopes to do so at one point for Android Jelly Bean apps. He also added that some developers that were only planning on porting their existing Android app for the OS (which only runs on two devices, the BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 at the moment, with plans to release more models in the next months), have decided to build a native one, encouraged by device sales.

Developers that aren’t building a native app are customizing their Android one, in order to fully use the operating system’s features (such as the notification center, called the BlackBerry Hub,) the executive also said, using the Amazon Kindle and eBay apps as examples. Both have been ported from Android, with BlackBerry features added to them.

Whatever the reason and the method, fact is that the number of apps in the store has grown by no less than 30,000 in seven weeks, a pretty serious increase, and with new models coming soon, as well as Google chairman Eric Schmidt still loving his BlackBerry, there still is some potential there.
