Best new Android apps of the month (August 2012 edition)

August 31, 2012

In some parts of the world, the end of August marks the end of the meteorological winter and the coming of the meteorological spring.  But, in the world of Android app development, every day and every month is a springtime of Android apps designed for performing nearly every conceivable human task.

What new sprouts emerged this month in the Android garden?  In this August 2012 edition of our series of posts about the best new Android apps of the month, we share with you thirty of the best that we were able to find.  As usual, these are hand-picked from a mix of various app types.

Find out what the ingenious app developers have thrown our way this month.  At the end of this long list, we’ll also let you in on our favorites from this bunch.

    Monster Geeks

Got nothing to do? How about joining the Monster Geeks in their quest to defeat the Red Dragon? This is one of the funniest and cutest RPG games on your Android device.

If you are familiar with the PlayStation Portable game Patapon, Monster Geeks almost follows the same concept except that you won’t be controlling your army by musical rhythm. In this game, you will be controlling the Hero. This is the leader of the game. You can control your character by using the virtual buttons below the screen. You can also cast elemental spells on your enemies and healing spells to keep your army standing.

Aside from the main character, the game also allows you to have AI companions. These characters will help you during battles, but you won’t be able to control them. At the start of the game, you will have the Tanker and the Shaman on your quest to defeat the Red Dragon. You can unlock the Archer and Mage with gems.

The Monster Geeks can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. But, you will have to endure the ads appearing in the background. Ads appear occasionally above the screen and are positioned in a way that won’t hinder you while playing the game. I also didn’t find an option to get rid of the ads.

The game has a shop where you can upgrade your characters and buy new items. You can use gold coins that you accumulated within the game to buy stuff. Some items can be only be bought using Gems. You can buy additional Gems by with real money.

Overall game experience was good and entertaining. I did not encounter any bugs or force close errors while playing the game.

    VZW GS3 EZ-Unlock (Bootloader)

You can unleash the true potential of your Android phone once you unlock the bootloader. With an unlocked bootloader, you can flash custom recovery, ROMs, and kernels that would significantly boost the performance of your Android phone. If you haven’t unlocked the bootloader of your Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-I535, it’s the perfect time to do so with the VZW GS3 EZ-Unlock (Bootloader) app.

This app allows you to easily unlock and lock your Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3′s bootloader. You won’t need to input complicated commands at a terminal, or wade in confusing instructions to unlock your phone. Just launch the app and let it do the rest. But, before you enjoy the easy path of unlocking the bootloader, you must first face the dangerous road of rooting your phone. You will need to have root access in order to use this app. If you need help with rooting, see our guide on how to root the Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-I535 using a pre-rooted system.img or how to root the Galaxy S3 I535 without Odin.

Launching the app will bring you to its main interface. You will find two buttons: one for unlocking, and another one for locking the bootloader. Your phone’s bootloader unlock status will also be displayed above. Just tap a button and let the app do the rest. You will also find ads sitting nicely below the screen.

The VZW GS3 EZ-Unlock (Bootloader) can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. If you need a complete walkthrough, see our guide on how to unlock bootloader on the Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-I535.

    Disk Defragmenter

Disk defragmentation is a process that lessens the amount of fragmentation inside a storage device. In layperson’s term, it is a process where files stored inside a mass storage device is arranged and strategically organized into smaller segments of contiguous regions called fragments. This results in improved performance in accessing files and could free some space on your mass storage device. In Linux, you won’t need defragmentation tools since Linux uses a file system that uniquely arranges the files to accommodate increasing file size and avoid gaps in the storage device.

Since Android is based on Linux, you might be wondering where you can use the Disk Defragmenter app. You can use this app to defragment files on your external mass storage formatted to the fragment-prone FAT32 and NTFS file systems.

The app’s main interface shows the storage devices on your Android device. Since your device is Linux-based, you won’t need to defragment the internal storage. A message will also appear, reminding you that your internal storage device doesn’t require disk defragmentation, when you choose your internal device. You will need to tap external storage with file system of FAT32 or NTFS to begin the process.

A progress bar will be displayed. You will also find color legends below to see how much free space is created, the defragmented files, and such.

The Disk Defragmenter app can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. Since this is a free app, the developer opted for push notification ads to support the app. The app’s interface is also clean and worked well while it defragmented my SD card. Although I cannot determine a change in performance, a lot of users commented that they noticed some performance improvement on their Android device.

    Pyramid Run

We at Android Authority surely love to play with the undead. In our quest to look for the best apps, we found ourselves in an ancient pyramid. Indeed, we found great treasures but we also have awakened the undead that protect the ancient pyramid. Grab the treasure and run for your life with the Pyramid Run game on your Android device.

The game follows the same concept as Temple Run. You will need to control a character, steer clear of obstacles, and run as far as you can. You can control your character by swiping and tilting. Swipe towards the direction you want your character to turn. Swipe up to jump and swipe down to slide. You can also tilt your device to avoid obstacles or collect coins along the way.

Along the way, you will go through different running scenes. The speed and the difficulty increases as the game progresses. You can choose 2 characters in the game: the Prince of Persia or the Persian Princess.

Pyramid Run can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. The app will also come ads supported. Ads will only appear after every run and not during the game. The game features a shop where you can spend collected coins on additional items. But, at the moment, the shop only sells extra lives. It would be good if the shop featured more items such as the power of invulnerability or a coin multiplier.

    100 Gates

After escaping the wrath of the undead, we found ourselves trapped inside a haunted mansion. In order to get out, you must open 100 Gates to be free. Opening a gate sounds easy, right? But, this haunted mansion is a special one and you will need to solve unique puzzles to open the gates and break free.

This is a simple puzzle game. All you have to do is figure out the special key in order to unlock the gates. You will need to complete a missing object, shake your phone, paint the lion symbol, or do whatever is necessary to unlock the gate. You can also find clues on each stage that will help you on unlocking the gate. Look at the direction of the knives on the wall, find clues on the numbers displayed on the gates, or the strange colors of the door. To add some spooky effect, you will hear a creepy sound when you open a gate.

The 100 Gates game can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store and comes with ads appearing below the screen. We didn’t find the ads a big distraction while playing the game. The game is also very entertaining and is a perfect way to spend your extra time off. The game’s current version features only 20 levels. More levels will come with future updates.

Disc defrag programs are a complete waste of time for flash memory. It only benefits drives with physical moving parts to save seek time which doesn’t exist on flash drives. Stupid app.

      • aaron disibio

        Read the app description

        Just a stupid name….

    • John

Why is there a Disk Defragmenter listed here? Defragmenting solid state memory is completely unnecessary, and will actually do more harm than good.

      • aaron disibio

That’s not actually what it does …….

    • tB

..and disk defragmenter isn’t even in the play store, Appbrain download only.

    • Riz

SD Cards and other solid memory do not suffer performance issues from fragmentation. Only hard drives and any other spin based storage device will do because the read/write head has to do additional round trip to seek out the next bit of data or find a slot to write to.

so there’s a knock off of temple run, a knock off of 100 floors, and a defragmenter…got it

      • MasterMuffin

I was thinking the same: wtf android authority

Disk Defragmenter.. hmm.. I thought fragmentation was impossible on solid state devices due to random access?

      • aaron disibio

Its just a misleading name’ doesn’t actually defrag

Android “authority”? More like Android moron. Half assed versions of good games and software that will potentially damage your Android device. Do proper research before writing an article.
