Chinese search giant Baidu is now preparing to launch its first smartphone, which at this stage is known under the name “Baidu Cloud Phone”. The smartphone will be officially unveiled on December 21st via a special online conference.
So what is exactly is the Baidu Cloud phone? The upcoming smartphone is a cooperative effort between Baidu, China Telecom and an unnamed hardware manufacturer. Instead of using an existing operating system, the phone will be powered by Baidu's own OS, which is basically a forked version of Google Android.
As far as the hardware is concerned, the phone will feature a 4.5-inch touchscreen with a rumored resolution of 540×960 and will be powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor. The Cloud Phone will come in white, red and black color variations.
Baidu is touting its Cloud Phone as an “100% Internet phone”, allow it remains unclear exactly what they mean by that at this point. All we know is that Baidu's offering is supposedly very different from traditional Internet phones.
Until December 21st arrives, we really don't know much solid information about the operating system or even the hardware manufacturer involved with the phone. Pricing and store arrival dates also remain a mystery for now.
The Chinese market already has tons of competing smartphones out there, many of which are currently running on Android. Is there room in the Chinese market for another new OS? Considering its strong position in search, if anyone has a chance to break into the market in a big way, it is probably Baidu.
Based on what we currently know, what do you think of Baidu's Cloud Phone and upcoming OS?
