Google came out today and confirmed that it is working on a software patch to address the 3G connectivity problems that some Nexus One users are experiencing. Google is currently testing the patch and will roll it out as an OTA update to handsets in the next few weeks. Google deftly points out that not all 3G issues will be improved by the fix and that some of the problem stems from T-Mobile’s weak 3G footprint which leaves many users right on the verge of 3G coverage or without 3G coverage. Google can not force T-Mobile to expand it’s 3G …
Google’s ongoing dispute with China has paved the way for Motorola to venture out on its own and continue to offer its Android handsets with a decidedly non-Google bent. Last Thursday, Motorola launched its own app store, SHOP4APPS, which was spied about a month ago in its pre-launch form and will provide Chinese Android users with a non-Google means of acquiring apps. Motorola also announced that it is partnering with Baidu, the dominant search provider in China, and others to load its Chinese Android phones with search, email and maps from these China-based service providers. The Motorola Milestone joins the ranks of “rooted” Android devices as the first successful root of the European variant of the DROID has been demonstrated by SeraphimSerapis of Android-Hilfe.de. Similar to the DROID, the process of rooting the Milestone is drop dead easy with a user simply applying an update.zip file during boot. Now that root has been achieved, Milestone owners can look forward to all sorts of hackery and rooting goodness to come their way. Welcome to the club! [via Engadget]
Remember the Android tablet from HTC that was supposedly going to debut at CES? The tablet and its super-secret unveiling never materialized and now we may know why. According to Anthony Petts, Australian Sales and Marketing Director for HTC, both the Android and Chrome-based tablets are being shelved so the company can focus on a new crop of smartphones. Disappointing news for the tablet fans in our midst but not surprising. With the Apple tablet rumors reaching a crescendo, many potential tablet manufacturers may be taking a step back to see what Cupertino has to offer first. [via wmpoweruser and …
The same folks that showed us a hands-on video of the Dell Mini 5 were kind enough to tear it down and give us a closer look at the hardware under the hood. On the inside of this lovely looking tablet is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor, a 3G modem with SIM slot, a user-accessible microSD card slot, an internal microSD slot for on-board storage and/or the Android OS, a WiFi chipset, and a 1,530 mAh battery. The video, in Vietnamese with a rocking music track, is after the jump.
Acer recently refreshed its Aspire One D250 netbook, replacing Windows XP with both Windows 7 and Android. Yes, that’s right, Android on a commercially available netbook. The D250 is a true dual boot solution, offering users the ability to boot into Windows 7 or Android during startup. A wonderful idea that, unfortunately, fails due to poor hardware design as the D250 lacks a touchscreen, a critical component that is necessary for Android to operate at its full potential. You can navigate the Android OS using your keyboard and mouse but it is not the same as using your fingers to …
