Why Android Will Win: There’s a Big Market for Inexpensive Quality Tablets

by: LucianAugust 22, 2011

In case you haven’t noticed people have been going crazy these days over the $99 HP TouchPad. The only problem? They’ve sold out way too early, and a lot more people would want one. It seems that people don’t care that much about the availability of apps as long as it’s a tablet with a good browser and of course the core apps such as e-mail clients, music players, and so on.

HP TouchPad – The Best Android 4.0 Tablet?

The hardware for the TouchPad is very powerful. It’s a 1.2 Ghz Qualcomm processor, like the one found in HTC Sensation. So as soon as Google open sources Android 4.0 this fall, which will work for both phones and [...]

Coming Soon: Solar Powered LG Optimus Sol with Ultra-AMOLED

by: LucianAugust 22, 2011

LG entered the Android game a bit late last year, but it’s definitely looking like they are trying their best to catch-up with the other big boys in the industry. What I’m liking about them lately is that they’ve stopped simply cloning Samsung’s devices and offering them for a lower price, and also lower quality. They are really trying to set themselves apart with their last few devices, and also trying to make them higher and higher quality. Their upcoming LG Optimus Sol is just one of their latest attempts to do that.

Solar Powered

Are we about to see a wave of solar powered phones and other devices soon? If that’s so, then LG is one of [...]

Is the Nexus Prime Coming First to Verizon?

by: LucianAugust 21, 2011

Verizon has never been too fond of the Nexus phones. I remember when Google launched the Nexus One, a Verizon exec was right there with Google, and saying they’ll have the Nexus One in spring (Nexus One was being launched in January on T-mobile). It never happened.

Why didn’t Verizon get the first 2 Nexus phones? Because they were afraid Google might succeed in making Americans want to buy unlocked phones from their website, instead of buying them from Verizon’s store and being locked in 2 year contracts. If Google would’ve succeeded, it might’ve meant that in the future people would also demand from the carriers to sell phones that work [...]

Without Android, Would Manufacturers Be Like Apple or Palm, Right Now?

by: LucianAugust 19, 2011

The mobile market experienced an earthquake when Apple launched in 2007. But it wasn’t felt right away. It was an earthquake that was felt gradually, and increasing in strength as time went by. It took a while for the other manufacturers to realize the implications of the touchscreen smartphone. The leaders in the industry, Nokia and RIM, and even Microsoft, did exactly what I would expect industry leaders to do when they get disrupted – they dismissed the iPhone.

They kept dismissing it for years, until they finally realized that the demand for iPhones is not slowing down at all, but keeps rising, and even their loyal customers might soon start to want a [...]

WOW! Apple Provides Misleading Evidence to Court. Again

by: LucianAugust 19, 2011

This is unbelievable, and it’s really starting to get ridiculous. Apparently Apple was so satisfied with the result of the first injunction in Germany, where they manipulated the image of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to make it the same size and give it a more 4:3 ratio, so they can “prove” that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is “virtually identical” to the iPad, that they decided to do it once again at the Court in Netherlands, this time for the Galaxy S smartphone.

Webwereld reconstructed Apple evidence*

Apple provided the Court with this evidence while trying to show “an example of the similarity relevant to copyrights.” [...]

Why Is Samsung Recruiting the Best ROM Developers?

by: LucianAugust 18, 2011

Samsung is the best manufacturer right now to take on Apple, which is why Apple is being so aggressive against them lately. Their hardware is top notch and improving significantly each year, they have a good brand name, and can also distribute their devices in over 130 countries. But there’s one element that hasn’t been so great throughout most of its history, and that is their Touchwiz skin. Although, it has constantly improved and new features have been added, I think a lot of people could live without it. This, and the fact that they want to be as good in software as they are in hardware, seems to lead them to a recruiting spree of the top ROM makers from the Android [...]

Asus Transformer 2, Kal-El, and the Future of Notebooks (and Tablets)

by: LucianAugust 17, 2011

Nvidia promised us (again) that we’ll see their latest Tegra chip at the end of August in tablets. I don’t know if it’s their fault, or the manufacturers’ fault for adopting the chip late, or perhaps they all wanted to wait for Android 4.0 to launch it together with Kal-El/Tegra 3, but the first tablets with Kal-El got delayed until October. The first tablet that is supposed to have this quad core 1.5 Ghz chip is apparently Asus’ next-gen Transformer tablet.

The first Transformer

The first Transformer was probably the most loved Android tablet from the first wave of Honeycomb tablets. It wasn’t the lightest or the slimmest, but it [...]

The Sub-$100 Android Phones Have Arrived

by: LucianAugust 17, 2011

Nokia has long dominated the developing worlds like Asia and Africa with their cheap phones for sale, but as the world is moving to smartphones, and every phone is being replaced by a smartphone, Android is there to take that domination away from them, even at the very low end price ranges.

The smartphone prices are dropping about a third each year compared to the previous year (for the exact same hardware), and considering the low-end Android phones started selling at around $150 (unlocked) about a year ago, they should start dropping into the $100 range and below by the end of this year, and more than one manufacturers will offer them.

Huawei takes the [...]

Apple’s Injunction Overturned for Most of Europe

by: LucianAugust 16, 2011

It seems that Samsung has already managed to lift the injunction on its Galaxy Tab 10.1 throughout Europe (except Germany), at least for now. One of the first things that I found odd with the German Court putting an injunction on the Galaxy Tab 10.1, is that they managed to do it throughout Europe. I wasn’t aware that the EU had such a law where one, almost random, Court (Germany doesn’t even have the presidency of EU right now) can put an injunction on companies that will cover the whole EU.

It looks like there may have been several procedural errors with this case, and besides the one about the misleading evidence Apple presented to the Court (whether [...]

5 Reasons Why Motorola Is a Great Fit for Google

by: LucianAugust 16, 2011

A lot has been said about Google getting Motorola for their patents, and that’s certainly one of the major reasons why they bought them, but Google wouldn’t have bought Motorola with their 20,000 employees, and pay $12.5 billion just for their patents.

Here are 5 other reasons why the Motorola acquisition is a great fit for Google:

1) Android smartphones, in Google’s vision

Getting Motorola, which, even after a series of missteps lately, I still consider one of the best 3 Android manufacturers, will give Google a big player in the handset market, and they’ll be able to more directly influence the way the smartphone market should evolve. [...]
