LG Phones Will Not Get Android 4.0 Until April 2012. They Still Don’t Get It

by: LucianDecember 27, 2011

I’ve been criticizing LG for not going full force on updating their phones to the latest versions of Android. It seems the criticism was well placed because LG still doesn’t look like they’ve learned their lesson. LG needs to realize they are not even a top 3 player in people’s minds, which means that if they ever want to be in that place they will have to work even harder than the top 3 players to get there. It’s the only way if they want to catch-up.

But instead of doing that, they are taking their time, probably because they tell themselves they don’t have enough resources to compete with the top 3 players. Well, if they keep [...]

Novo7 Paladin with Android 4.0 Will Come to US for $120

by: LucianDecember 27, 2011

The Novo7 Paladin tablet made a big splash a few weeks ago when it was announced to be the first Android 4.0 tablet. That came as a big shock, because the company behind it, Ainovo, is a small no-name player, and yet they will manage to bring Android 4.0 to the masses before all the big players.

I have to admit I was disappointed when at the Android 4.0/Galaxy Nexus event, Google didn’t have a tablet prepared, too. I mean Android 4.0 was supposed to be the great unifier between phones and tablets, and yet here they were showcasing only a phone. I found that a little strange and it was also a lost opportunity for Google.

Ideally, I would’ve had them [...]

Asus Transformer Prime Launching on January 12th in UK

by: LucianDecember 26, 2011

It seems the Asus Transformer Prime was delayed by at least a month compared to the initial reports that it will be launched on December 9th, then pushed to 19th, and now, at least in UK it was announced that it’s going to be launched on January 12th.

This is quite a delay, and we don’t really know what’s been causing this. When I first heard the Asus CEO that Android 4.0 could launch even by the end of 2011 on Asus Transformer Prime, I immediately thought it would’ve been a better idea to wait until it actually gets Android 4.0 instead of launching it with Android 3.2, get all the reviews like that, and then update it to Android [...]

Were You Waiting for the ICS UI On Galaxy S2? Sorry to Disappoint

by: LucianDecember 15, 2011

Well here’s some bad news for some (most?) of you. It looks like even though the Samsung Galaxy S2 will receive an update to Android 4.0, it will look nothing like ICS at all. In fact you’ll barely notice any difference in the UI compared to what you have now. It will mostly be the same old TouchWiz 4.0. So most of the changes will be under the hood.

Personally, I find this very disappointing. I was hoping manufacturers would finally start to allow lighter skins on top of Android 4.0, so the user can choose whether he wants to use the stock UI or the UI made by the manufacturer. I understand that the manufacturer feels compelled to make modifications [...]

Android 4.0 Starts to Get Optimized for Qualcomm S4 Chips

by: LucianDecember 14, 2011

Last year Qualcomm got behind everyone else in dual core chips and not only in time to market, but also in performance. The dual core 1.2 Ghz S3 chip could easily be surpassed by a Cortex A9 based Exynos at the same frequency of 1.2 Ghz/core. That’s because the custom Scorpion architecture was more of a competitor to Cortex A8, and when the more powerful and more efficient Cortex A9 arrived, Qualcomm kept the same architecture and only increased the clock frequency. This is why even dual core 1.5 Ghz S3 processors can barely match up to the dual core 1.2 Ghz Exynos or OMAP 4430/4460.

The good news is that I’m expecting the chips based on the Krait [...]

Plants vs Zombies Finally Coming to the Android Market This Week

by: LucianDecember 14, 2011

This may come as a surprise to some of you, but Plants vs Zombies has only been available in the Amazon App Store so far, and it’s been quite a few months since it first launched on Amazon with their free app of the day program, and later being priced at $2.99. Apparently, the exclusivity lasted a lot more than it did for other apps.

Plants vs Zombies is easily one of the most addicting games I’ve ever played (played it on the PC actually), and I’d even go to say that it’s more addicting than Angry Birds. Once you get into it, you’ll want to play it for days until you finish it. It’s a lot of fun, and it’s built in such [...]

Sony Ericsson Arc HD (Nozomi) Shows Up Again

by: LucianDecember 14, 2011

The Arc has been one of  Sony Ericsson’s best smartphones this year. It was slim, as it was supposed to be, since most of their competition had phones like that already, and it was stylish. Design is still one of Sony’s strong suit, but it doesn’t go well with thick phones, which is how most of their phones still are. But I imagine they will be pushing other slim phones in 2012.

The Arc HD is not only proof of that, but it’s also a bit of proof that Sony Ericsson is finally understanding that they need to be on the edge with hardware specs, too. Here are the rumored specs for it:

Android 2.3 Gingerbread 4.3 inch 720p HD display 1.5 GHz [...]

Galaxy S3 Fan-Made Teaser and Possible Specs

by: LucianDecember 13, 2011

For the past 2 smartphone tech generations, Samsung has gone beyond our expectations in terms of performance and quality with their high-end Galaxy S models. So I wouldn’t be too surprised if next year they’ll launch once again a smartphone that will be kind of the hill for the following 6 months or so, just like the previous Galaxy S models were.

We’ve heard some rumors before that Galaxy S3 will be a quad core phone, and some of the newer rumors seem to confirm that:

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI 4.6 inch HD Super AMOLED Plus display 1.5 GHz quad-core Exynos 4412 processor 1.5-2 GB RAM 12 MP rear camera

If this [...]

Preview of Tegra 3 Tablets: Asus Transformer Prime vs HTC Quattro vs Lenovo LePad K2 vs Acer Iconia A700

by: LucianDecember 12, 2011

Even though Tegra 3 tablets are arriving much later than when Nvidia promised us at MWC this year (for late August), they should still be able to hold the ground as the most powerful tablets for at least a few months. Plus, I believe the only quad core tablets in the first half of 2012 will be the ones with Tegra 3, and maybe a few of them will have quad core S4 chips by the end of 2012. It won’t be until 2013 that we’ll see quad core Cortex A15 tablets.

Asus Transformer Prime

I really believe Asus is onto something big here with their hybrid tablet/netbook device with the integrated keyboard dock, and the slim ultrabook-like build. I hope Samsung [...]

Why Can’t Android Manufacturers Just Re-Invent the Wheel?

by: LucianDecember 11, 2011

I’ve just stumbled upon an article on Techcrunch that says much of what I’ve been saying in the past about the whole idea that Apple should have legal monopoly over the tablet market because of some patents or because they happened to make a more desirable tablet than anyone else up to that point.

The thing about the patent system is that it doesn’t account for how businesses are created in the real world. Every now and then you’ll have a company that creates a new “product category”. Well, they actually create a “product” first, but since that product can’t really fit in any existing category, it ends up defining [...]
