There is an explosive amount of developers already making games for mobile platforms, and hundreds of thousands more that want to make games for Android, iOS, etc. The problem? Not everyone can afford the tools…
There's nothing funnier than a game that pokes fun at its own genre. While high-fantasy settings can be breathtaking and interesting, sometimes it takes itself too seriously. You're a noble knight on a quest to restore your lost honor and you need to battle others and travel the land. How often has this been done before? It's easy to eye high-fantasy in any form skeptically.
Artibus' Angry Heroes (Free), however, is here to renew your love for the genre. This game is a delightful MMORPG that makes fun of the high fantasy setting and gives it a new twist.
The basic story is that you, a warrior, was mugged of all your belongings while traveling. You wind up in an unnamed town, eager to reclaim your lost clothing, cash, and dignity. Start off by choosing your race and your character's name. You can choose between Orc, Human, and Elf; each class has its own set of strengths and weaknesses.
Now that you've picked your character's race, pick a distinct look. You can choose your typical fantasy appearance, such as an Orc with way too much leather, and the bearded and bald human, but you can also choose a hipster orc, or a tattooed elf.
Once you're all set, head over to the merchant to outfit your character with a weapon and some armor. Unfortunately, you're short of cash, but the merchant has a kind heart. He'll set you up with a Nasty Plunger of Humiliation as a weapon and a Nasty Box of Humiliation as armor. If you have enough gold, you could upgrade to items such as the Scabby Fish of Defeat and the Dirty Broom of Laziness.
As you can already tell, this game is not for those who take their high fantasy seriously. Angry Heroes is not serious business; it features great humor and skits with the most common of high-fantasy cliches.
You're treated to a comical set up with a lot of bright colors and hilariously drawn characters. In your adventures, you'll encounter enemies such as cool incubi, trolls that look like rockstars, hilarious battle unicorns, and disco skeletons.
In order to gain back your cash, you can fight random opponents in the Arena or embark on quests. You can choose to fight other players who are weaker than you, are at the same level as you, or are stronger than you. After every fight, you'll need to take a few minutes to rest, but if you're eager to bust some more skulls, you can skip the waiting for a Shroom. Shrooms are the game's special currency which you can buy from a possibly high hippie using real cash.
If you want to take quests, hit the Tavern and talk to the suspicious stranger. Quests last anywhere between 1 to 8 minutes and the whole time, you'll be shown one of the game's fabulously rendered backgrounds. It's a great way for you to earn money and experience points while you're doing something else, such as writing an app review. You can also skip the waiting period by paying one Shroom.
If you have a lot of time to spare, you can earn more money by lending your services to the town guard. For every hour that you guard, you'll be paid a handsome amount. Unfortunately, when you guard, you can't do anything else. If you need to focus on work, you can sign up for guard duty for a few hours and leave your phone unattended. Just make sure you don't abandon your post! The head guard won't like that, and as a penalty, you won't be able to take guarding duty for a while.
In addition to buying better weapons and armor, you can upgrade your sad excuse of a mansion to give you benefits. There are many areas in your mansion, each of them geared towards benefiting you in a certain way. Upgrading your tower, for example, will give you more space in your inventory. The gold mine will also make sure that your pockets are always lined with gold.
Angry Heroes' music is unremarkable but I think it's better that way. It blends into the background and after two hours of playing the game, I didn't feel like muting it at all.
Angry Heroes is not the type of game to play if you want something with a compelling and complicated plot. It is, however, a marvelous way to waste time.
