Android to grab 10% market share, reach 150,000 apps in 2010

With the end of the year holiday season in full swing, our thoughts inevitably begin to focus on the year ahead and according to some analysts, 2010 is going to be the year for Android to shine. Forrester Research is predicting that Android will grab a 10% market share in 2010, almost tripling its current 3.5% share. Much of this growth will be driven by strong manufacturer and carrier support from Qualcomm, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, and Google and an increase in the number of developers supporting the open Android platform. Speaking of developers, the Android Market is expected to explode, according to mobile application analytic firm Flurry, with an estimated 150,000 applications populating the wireless storefront by the end of 2010. With more choices in handsets and more apps than we can imagine, 2010 can’t come a minute too soon.

“The Android Smartwatch is now in physical form”?

I’d hate to disappoint you, but the Sony SmartWatch runs Android (Gingerbread, if memory serves me correctly…), has LLOONNGG usage times AND can download applications/games from the Google Play Store (I believe there are around 300 compatible applications and games)… It was also released long before the smartwatch referred to above was even conceived.

  The Sony Smartwatch is a dumb terminal. Everything displayed on the screen (with exception of the watchfaces) are images served from the smartphone.
  
  …Nothing about this comment is true. No applications or games exist that run on the Smartwatch. It doesn’t even have a long usage time. The maximum battery life with max usage is only a few hours AT MOST.
  
  An android powered smartwatch would be pretty massive in terms of development. Currently the Sony Smartwatch has an extremely limited API. Adversely, a smartwatch running Android would be open to almost any application imaginable.

    You are also mistaken. Sony Smartwatch stores up to 255 widgets, most connects to the phone but some run independently on the watch.

  Of course, they are useful, reliable, and they can look really elegant. They only have like one or two uses but they do it pretty well. I would rather take a look at my watch than take the smartphone out of my pocket and turn the screen on.
