Google’s chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt took the stage at today’s Motorola event in New York, to talk about the significance of the Motorola acquisition, but also to break some impressive new numbers about Android.
According to Schmidt, over 1.3 million Android devices are activated every day, of which 70,000 are Android tablets. That’s an impressive jump over the 1 million figure that Google boasted at Google I/O at the end of June. In other words, activations grew 30% in a little over two months.
Another impressive statistic that Schmidt outed on stage was the total number of Android users in the world, which is currently 480 million. The Google exec claimed that the total user base is two to three times larger than “the other choices”, without ever mentioning iOS or other operating systems.
Eric Schmidt talked about why Google acquired Motorola. Referring to the exploding mobile ecosystem, he said “to me, that’s why Google needed to have Motorola Mobility be part of it. We have to play in this ecosystem too. We have to be competitive, and we have to do it at the state of the art.”
At the event today that Schmidt opened, Motorola unveiled three new smartphones from the Razr family – the Razr HD, Razr Maxx HD, and Razr M.

Ótimos números. O Android só tende a crescer cada vez mais, já que está sendo utilizado em vários dispositivos, tais como máquinas fotográficas, smartphones, tablets e vários outros.
According to Wikipedia article for iOS, “At the half of 2012, there were 410 million devices activated. ” Even assuming each Android user only had one device there is still a lot more Android devices (This is assuming iOS has not accumulated about 70 million more device sales in the last 2-3 months. :P)
