Android 4.3 AOSP already running on Xperia Z, ZL, and Tablet Z, but with limited functionality (video)
Google announced Android 4.3 yesterday in San Francisco, and as usual, many are going to be waiting for quite a few months before they see Android 4.3 on their devices, excluding Nexus device owners, of course. However, as we reported earlier, Sony’s already preparing the new Android version for a few, select devices, and they already have a video up to showcase what it looks like on the Xperia Tablet Zed!
As a quick reminder, Sony is working with Google and Qualcomm to prepare Android 4.3 for a few of their recent devices:
- Xperia Z
- Xperia ZL
- Xperia ZR
- Xperia Tablet Z
- Xperia SP
- Xperia Z Ultra
According to an updated blog post, Sony already has Android 4.3 AOSP running on the Xperia Z, ZL, and Tablet Z, though it has very limited functionality. This means developers using the Xperia Z, ZL or Tablet Z, can build and flash Android 4.3 AOSP using the device configuration on GitHub. However, it’s not meant to be used as a daily driver, as a lot of the functionality just isn’t there, yet.
Regardless, it’s impressive that we’re already seeing Android 4.3 running on these devices, as manufactures often take a really long time to get something like this up and running, let alone show it off to the public. You can watch the video demonstration below:
As my colleague, Bogdan Petrovan earlier mentioned, we’ll probably see ASUS announce Android 4.3 for some of their devices in the coming weeks, as they usually tend to be really fast when it comes to new updates. As for other manufacturers, well, let’s just say that most people are going to be waiting a really long time, as Android 4.2 hasn’t even hit a lot of devices, yet.
So, when will Sony have Android 4.3 AOSP fully ready for these devices? We can’t really guess, as preparing updates like this takes months to put together. However, we can say that they’re certainly ahead of the competition, and we’ll hopefully see a full build sooner than later.
