A yet-unannounced Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update for the Sony Ericsson Xperia play has been rolling out to several users, and it comes with a really nice surprise: 720p HD video recording capability (with continuous autofocus) for the Xperia play.

Several members of XDA Forums have confirmed receiving the update for their Xperia play. One member also posted a sample video taken using the Sony Ericsson Xperia play running updated Gingerbread.

The update apparently is not yet being delivered over-the-air (OTA), although some forum members say it will eventually be pushed out as an OTA update. There was also mention of the update’s availability through PC Companion.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia play is an Android smartphone intended for those who wish to use their smartphones for video gaming. It has a slide-out game control pad with controller buttons and two touch-sensitive analog sticks.

The HD video recording capability enabled by the Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update practically extends the Sony Ericsson Xperia play’s functions beyond just smartphone and game console in that of HD video recording device.

For a sample of an HD video recorded using the Xperia play, take a look at this video provided by one XDA Forums member:

Have you received/applied this reported update on your Xperia play yet? If so, how is the quality of the HD video?

I wonder how long we’ll have to wait before Telstra (Australia) make this available to their customers? Three months? Six Months? Longer?

If the Xperia X10a upgrades are anything to go by, I’m not going to hold my breath…

    • Gregory Opera, i am with you on that one mate. Telstra (Australia), should get there head out of there ass, and release all of the updates as soon as Sony, or for that mater any manufacturer releases them. it is not fare that severs providers hold back or just plain not release the updates. forcing you into buying a new phone with the update already installed. it makes me mad as hell to see that you have to wait, Three months? Six Months? or even Longer? after the updated phones hit the store shelf’s. just to update your phone, kinda sux doesn’t it.
