Amazon giving away $10 in Amazon Coins, in return you must download five free apps (update!)

by: Andrew GrushMay 22, 2014

In an effort to promote a few apps while also rewarding its users for downloading them, Amazon is giving away 1000 Amazon coins to download five free apps. For those that don’t know, this equates to about $10 worth of credit which you can use to pick up the premium apps and/or games of your choice.

So what are the games? Nothing special: Food Network in the Kitchen, iHeart Radio, Strawberry Shortcake Bake Shop, Don’t step the white tile, and Dr. Panda’s Restaurant.

Now you might be thinking that only one or two of these apps (or none) seem remotely interesting. Honestly, that’s fine. You can still get all 1000 Amazon coins and yet never actually download anything. How’s that work? To put it simply, you head to Amazon and log-in. You then choose these five apps and “purchase” them (they are all free). You’ll instantly be awarded the coins, whether you actually decide to install them onto your device or not.

Pretty sweet deal really. The only catch here is that the promotion runs only until 5/31, so you’ll need to act quickly if you want to take advantage of this offer.

Update: While this was already an epic deal, it seems there might be a way to double your earning so to speak. After ‘purchasing’ the five free apps and getting your 1000 coins, a tipster by the name IO585 suggests that you should head over and buy Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas using your coins. Not only do you get an amazing premium game, downloading San Andreas brings you a bonus 2000 coins, and takes your total up to 2245 Amazon coins — a bit over $22 worth for free. Have you tried this out? Did it work for you? Let us know in the comments!

I love how many free things I get from Amazon

    • Aar0nC

i know! thanks to amazon I got Swiftkey for FREE!! best free “purchase” EVAR!!! lol

      • Corbin Crutch

Sadly however, their app store is greatly lacking content and I’m running out of things I want to “buy”

      • Phil Rigby

Is Swifkey better than Swype? What’s the difference(s)?

        • Aar0nC

Honestly I can’t say if SwiftKey is better than Swype since I haven’t used Swype, however I like SwiftKey because as a Bi-lingual speaker, its comes in handy that I can have one keyboard that takes care of both languages and even predicts words in both languages. The different keyboard themes (different styles and colors) are pretty good, and its able to re-size the keyboard itself if you have small or large fingers. Recently type added a swype-like feature called flow, so if you’re comfy swyping in order to type, you’ll feel right at home with this keyboard. Overall its a great keyboard. But for me to tell you one it better than the other would be a dishonesty since I haven’t used Swype. Try it out though!!

  • Aar0nC

so why is IheartRadio twice on the list?

    • Phil Rigby

      Because it’s a bad “cut-and-paste” job.

      • Andrew Grush

Actually, I secretly just love iHeartRadio so much, I felt it needed to be added twice.

Okay…. so what really happened was that I was reading off the list of apps from Amazon’s page and somehow ended up typing the same thing twice. So what Phil said is sort of correct, though it wasn’t really a “copy and paste” job gone wrong… just me spacing out and typing the same thing twice. :)

  • Phil Rigby

Thanks for the info – bonus 1,000 coins :-)

  • MasterMuffin

Do I need to add a credit card? All of Amazon’s offerings like these have always been either US only or have required credit card :/

    • AssToast

There are ways to get them outside US, and using PayPal test credit cards since it doesn’t matter if it’s real or not

  • Bilal Mahmood

I think it is not available in the UK?

    • MasterMuffin

Some of the apps are US only :/

      • AssToast

VPN enables you to buy them outside US :D

        • MasterMuffin

I know but I gave up already :(

          • EpicTickles

What probs you having? I might be able to help. Just got amazon working for me outside US and able to buy things

    • Adude

    • John Garlits

Worked for me, too! GTA is the Kindle Fire only version, and so I didn’t have a compatible device, but it didn’t matter. ;)

      • Saumil

        How did it still work?

        • John Garlits

I just hit continue through the warnings.

    • Vix

Currently, earned coins expire a year after you earn them

  • michi

Fantastic link!! Thanks for the information! One little correction: I listened to your suggestion in the Update and got the San Andreas game, but my total wasn’t 2,245 Amazon coins, it was 2,301! I attached a picture as proof :)

    • Guest

      Guess it didn’t post

    • kiNGng3

that’s because you don’t have tax deducted (as coins) in your area

  • Subzer0

The gta san andreas didnt work for me.. Says incompatible device, i dont have a kindle fire

    • mewikime

Do it from a PC. There’ll be a popup warning that it’s incompatible with your devices and asks if you wish to continue. Just hit yet. What’s to lose? Spend 700 free coins to earn 2000.

  • A_Ware

Only one issue – there is no way I’ll ever have anything to do with that atrocity of a POS “game”.

  • Alborz Azizpour

I downloaded 2 of these apps and I didn’t receive any coins. Any idea what happened? :-?
    I’m from Canada

  • mewikime

I got 2301 coins for grabbing the 5 free apps and then “purchasing” GTA San Andreas. Also, if you then use the coins to buy Plex (which at $0.9 is an 80% saving, you get an additional 250 free coins on top of the 30 it advertises.

    • Carlos Morales

it doesn’t state anywhere you will be rewarded 250 or 30 coins, but Plex sounds like a good app to own for $1 and spending free coins, i’ll purchase it.

  • Alborz Azizpour

I downloaded 2 of these apps and I didn’t receive any coins. Any idea what happened? :-?

  • Josh

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is not available on any of my devices so im not wasting my coins

    • Subzer0

You dont waste your coins because you gain 2000 anyways.. Smh

    • erikalin

Not a waste of coins – an instant way to get net profit of 1300 coins ($13 of apps). Spend 699 coins to instantly receive 2000 coins. No-brainer.

  • steve

if I download final fantasy 4, will it work on Galaxy s5 or jsut kindle?

  • Jenifer Rinker

it workedfor me with the San Andreas purchase, after getting a bunch of coins from other apps the other day. I didn’t even have to download it. I went to the website and purchased it, even though my device wasn’t compatible!

  • Justin Ko

Worked! Thanks for the info! and btw, I got 2301 coins

  • I tried doing the five apps then San Andreas purchase. worked perfectly. however, I had to use the website because some of the apps said they wouldn’t work with my device.

  • Radi

  • Peter Shamrock

    Worked ;) Thanks for sharing

  • Neon

From their terms and conditions page-

  • karsten

    worked for me.

  • STrauba

Best and fastest way is to:

    1. Sit down at a computer
    2. Login to your Amazon account via web
    3. Use the link to the five apps in the Android Authority article above
    4. ‘Purchase’ the apps (will work even if you have incompatible devices-don’t have to download to a device)
    5. Wait for your confirmation emails that you own the five apps
    6. Check your coin balance via Amazon App store app on your Android device
    7. Verify 1000 coins have been deposited
    8. Go back the computer and purchase Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for 699 coins
    9. Wait for confirmation email of purchase
    10. Check your coin balance on your Amazon App store app on your Android device
    11. Verify 2000 coins have been deposited

    12. Done!

  • Gabe

If you download those five apps for free, then go on to purchase GTA: San Andreas, it give 2000 more, then buy GTA III, and it gives 2000 more, then use that to buy GTA: Vice City, which also gives 2000 more. Doing all this gives you about $53 worth of coins for nothing!

  • yoyo

I can’t purchase gta san andreas because it is “incompatible” with my device: galaxy s3. Anyone else with this problem?

    • erikalin

Just say yes through the warnings. If you have to, go to a computer to do it. It’s a net profit of $13 in app credit – worth the minute to get it done. I can’t use it on my phone either, lol, but get the deal.

  • jer

    i can’t find iheart radio

  • bishopkenneth

Not quite sure how it all worked out, but I followed STrauba’s suggestions in the comment section, and got ended up with $27.43 in credit! :) Sweet. Thank you STrauba.

  • Tc Gomez
