Amazon brings kids entertainment package FreeTime Unlimited to Google Play

Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, a collection of thousands of books, TV shows, movies and apps for children, has now appeared in the Google Play Store. The app was previously exclusive to Kindle devices with the name “Kindle FreeTime Unlimited,” but Amazon quietly pushed it onto Google Play yesterday.

FreeTime Unlimited is a subscription service available to Amazon customers in the US, UK and Germany. It costs for $4.99 per month per child (or $2.99 for Prime members), or $9.99 per month for a family with up to four children (or $6.99 for Prime members). You can also trial it for one month for free.

As well as the entertainment titles, FreeTime Unlimited includes a “kid-friendly web browser,” (which can be turned off if you don’t want to provide web-browsing access at all) and parental controls that let you set time limits and restrict certain categories (like video).

I think it’s a smart move from Amazon to open this up to non-Kindle devices, especially as it’s a subscription service anyway. Trying to push Kindle hardware sales at the same time just seemed unnecessarily consumer unfriendly — this way many more people get a chance to access the app and Amazon is still getting paid.
