Amazon is reportedly working on Alexa-enabled glasses

Amazon is reportedly gearing up to take on Google Assistant and Apple's Siri with Alexa-enabled audio-only smart glasses.

Amazon has an ambitious plan to challenge Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri. According to a new report, the online commerce giant is planning to add Alexa into glasses so you can take the voice assistant everywhere. We’ve seen Google Assistant and Siri in wearables for years now, but Alexa has lagged behind, at least in terms of first-party hardware. It looks like Amazon is about to change that.

The normal looking glasses would not feature a screen or camera like the ill-fated Google Glass. Instead, it will feature a bone-conducting audio system that will let you talk to and hear Alexa directly from your spectacles. Since you won’t have to pull your phone out of your pocket to use Alexa, Amazon is betting on ease of use being a determining factor in which digital assistant you prefer.

While not featuring a camera or display might hurt some functionality of the glasses, it would do wonders for battery life and time of delivery. The time to develop and manufacture glasses with these features could take years and Amazon has already failed with ambitious hardware projects in the past. The strategy seems to be to get a simple proof-of-concept product on the market then develop the segment from there.

Amazon is also reportedly developing home security products like a security camera. The camera has been compared to offerings from Nest, but with the added benefit of being able to communicate with other Alexa-enabled products. For example, you could have the camera set up outside and show the video feed on your Echo Show‘s display with a simple voice command.

The personal assistant race is definitely heating up. We recently told you about Google’s effort to bring Assistant to other devices like Bose headphones and a wide range of speakers. Apple announced it’s Siri enable speaker earlier this year, and Amazon is adding Alexa into everything it can get its hands on.

Which digital assistant do you prefer? Does convenience play a factor in your decision? Let us know down in the comments.
