There aren’t that many decent Acer smartphones around just yet, but in a few weeks the company’s Android line-up should be enriched with two new mid-rangers. We’ve heard about the Liquid Gallant Duo around a month ago, when it was listed for pre-order by Expansys UK only to disappear without a trace soon after. But what we didn’t know back then was that the 4.3-incher was supposed to come with a “sibling”.

The Liquid Gallant Solo has now been spotted as well, although this hasn’t been officially unveiled by Acer either. It will most likely hit the market by mid-September. As you might suspect from its name, the new handheld is not very different from the Liquid Gallant Duo, with one noteworthy exception.

While the Gallant Duo is supposed to come with dual SIM capabilities, the newly “leaked” Solo will only be able to carry one SIM card. Aside from that, we’re guessing the two phones will rock identical specs and features.

What’s interesting (read: bizarre) about the new Liquid smartphone is how it came to our attention. Acer put up an official user manual of the device on the company’s official website, a manual that was quickly pulled off the web.

The thing is we’ve stopped believing in coincidences right around the time we stopped believing in Santa Claus, so it seems a bit far-fetched that Acer slipped the manual on the Internet by mistake and that someone with no ties to the company happened to spot it before it was pulled off. What we’re trying to say is that the “slip-up” was most likely intentional, which almost certainly means that Acer was trying to build up a bit of a hype and that the phone will see the light of day very soon (maybe even at the IFA 2012 in Berlin).

For those of you who missed the Liquid Gallant Duo’s faux Expansys listing, here’s the phone’s spec sheet, which will be copied to the letter by the Gallant Solo:

  • 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen with 960 x 540 pixels resolution and 256 ppi pixel density
  • Single-core 1 GHz MediaTek MT6575 processor
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 4 GB of internal storage
  • MicroSD card slot
  • Quadband GSM and 3G support on 900/2100 MHz networks
  • 5 MP rear-facing camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • Android 4.0 ICS
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity
  • GPS and micro USB support
  • 1,500 mAh battery
  • 145 grams
  • 129 x 65.9 x 9.9 mm dimensions

In terms of pricing, the Gallant Duo was listed by Expansys at £149 (around $230), but the Solo should be made available for less (maybe $200), considering that it lacks dual SIM support. Also, it’s safe to assume that if the phone will ever come Stateside, it will cost even less, so it already looks like a bargain to us.

Small battery and lousy screen resolution are a deal breaker here. Especially with an update to the Nexus 7 on the horizon.

    3250 mAh and 460g… WTF ?

    • Simon Belmont

Yeah. I can’t see that thing last more than 3-4 hours max with Wi-Fi on and web browsing.

I do applaud the fact that it has a GPS in it, though. A lot of low-end tablets omit that.

if its not a nexus 7 or kindle fire hd it cannot compete with the iPad mini

Ha. 3250 mAh, which is 1000 mAh less than the Nexus 7 (even my B&N Nook Color’s battery is 4000 mAh).

460 grams is over 1 pound. Pretty crazy for such a small battery and screen size.

Based on Antutu scores mediatek seems like needing to catch up to the Snapdragons 600/800 and Tegra 4s and the octas. With that said this is suppose to be a budget tablet.
