8GB Nexus 4 sold out again, as Google apparently closes ‘pre-orders’

December 1, 2012

Just yesterday we reported that the average shipping times for the 16GB Nexus 4 have slipped to 6-7 weeks, and now it looks like we have similar bad news for the 8GB model.

While you can still “pre-order” the 16GB Nexus 4 from the Play Store – because essentially that’s what you’re doing when you’re buying an item that will ship almost two months from now – the 8GB model is out of stock.

Google is not letting interested customers purchase the device anymore, after shipping time went up to 9-10 weeks, and it’s currently listing the $299 smartphone as “Sold Out.”

Obviously, the Nexus 4 is selling like hot cakes, but we have no idea really how hot the cakes are since Google isn’t sharing and Nexus 4 sales numbers yet, and it probably won’t do so in the near future either.

What seems to be clear is that LG can’t keep up with current Nexus 4 demand. And we’d definitely be interested to see how many Nexus 4 units have been sold to date. While we’re talking about sales numbers, we’d also be interested to see how well the Optimus G is selling since the handset is basically an upgraded Nexus 4 version.

While we wait for sales numbers, tell us, have you “pre-ordered” your Nexus 4 in this second purchasing round? What version did you get and how much time do you have to wait for it to ship?

Better than another failed order scenario. Get stock and ship current orders out then maybe reopen the orders

I ordered the 16GB version on Nov. 27, and was told to expect it in 2-3 weeks.

This is a bigger fail for LG than it is for Google. Google has these phones subsidized and really did this more as an experiment and part of a more general, wider goal of getting android to more sets of hands than it is now.

That Google can’t actually keep up with sales isn’t hurting them, it isn’t losing them money, and all it’s really doing is teaching them more how to and how to not run a phone campaign.

This is really a loss for LG, since it seems that it seems it’s LG that can’t keep up with demand, and it’s LG that’s making the real profits from the phone.

Hidalgo, you are assuming that the problem is a manufacturing issue (on behalf of LG). Maybe it’s not, maybe it’s a logistical/e-commerce problem. Or both? If it was a strictly a manufacturing issue, than Google’s Play Station server wouldn’t have gone when they put the Nexus on for sale. Furthermore, Google recently bought (BufferBox) a Canadian start-up company that specializes in online shopping. I think this provides evidence that has multiple logistical and business partner issues. And lastly. It is hurting Google’s button line as customers are getting irate over the ever increasing shipping dates. It’s just a matter of time before customer will go elsewhere to purchase their cell phones.

Got mine already and I’m loving it. I was going to try and convince my friend to get one but I don’t think that is going to happen now… Or at least not for a quite a while…

Tried ordering on Nov 13, first day of launch. Got it in cart but system crashed. After that until now, its sold out. I am in Toronto Canada.

Anyways faster forward two weeks, I just received the phone. No email no crap, just a charge on my credit card a day before and phone.

I wonder if new Samsung commercials will have bunch of Nexus fanboys sitting at their computers hitting F5 waiting, than a Samsung Note 2 user walks in and trolls them by actually having a phone. :p

      • Confused

        Lol that is too funny.

Of course LG could counter it by showing a guy running latest Android Jelly Bean while a Samsung S3 user would still br trying to fix bugs using ICS.
