They might still not have the glamour and glitz of the Academy Awards given out in cinema, but GSMA’s Global Mobile Awards have become a major point of interest for tech aficionados across the world.
The awards ceremony is traditionally held near the end of February or just before the MWC start, so you can count on all eyes being on technology and gadgets at the time. This year’s gala is the 18th in history and looks like one of the most heated up at least in some of the major categories.
The nominees have been announced moments ago, and, as expected, Samsung and Apple will probably battle it out for smartphone and tablet of the year. Sammy is actually the reigning smartphone champ, with the Galaxy S2 winning last year, and it might get to defend the title as it has two nominees this year – the GNote 2 and the GS3.
Of course, the Galaxy S3 has to be considered the favorite after its booming sales success and raging reviews across the web, but the iPhone 5 is certainly no underdog. The last two nominees, HTC’s Droid DNA and Nokia’s Lumia 920, don’t seem to stand a chance of winning, but they should still be proud of making the cut (unlike the Nexus 4, for instance).
The tablet fight might be even closer, as GSMA couldn’t only stop at five contenders. Hence, there are six nominees, four from Android (Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 8.9, the Asus Transformer Infinity, Google’s Nexus 7 and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1) and two from Apple (the iPad mini and the larger iPad with retina display).
It’s hard to say who’s favorite here, but I think it’s safe to assume the iPad mini, Transformer Infinity and Note 10.1 are not in the race. The Fire HD probably doesn’t stand a chance either, so it’ll all most likely come down to an iPad 4 vs Nexus 7 brawl. And you know who we’ll be rooting for.
Besides these two categories, there’ll be 30 other awards given out on February 26, including for best product, initiative or service in emerging markets, a “green mobile” award, device manufacturer of the year (go, Sammy!) and best new device at MWC 2013 (intriguing!).

So, who gets your votes? Will it be the GS3 and Nexus 7 in the top categories or Apple’s iPhone 5 and iPad 4? Or maybe Nokia’s Lumia 920 and the Transformer Infinity? How about the other
